Cumberland is a quaint little town in Cumberland County situated on the coast of Southern Maine in United States. It is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area and is ideally located 11 miles northeast of the city of Portland and 11 miles southwest of Freeport. As such, Cumberland is considered as one of the wealthiest municipalities in the state.

The town of Cumberland has been recognized as one of the most desirable and pleasant places to live and raise a family. This is also nationally ranked as one of the safest and smartest communities in the country. The town has a range of public parks and trails within the municipality including Broad Cove Reserve, Town Forest, Knight’s Pond Preserve, Twin Brook, Rines Forest, Val Halla, and West Cumberland Athletic Complex among others.

With a very rich farming history, Cumberland’s local farmer’s club has been organizing the Cumberland Fair since 1868. This is usually held at the end of September and is one of the biggest agricultural fair in the state. The Spring Brook Farms Sweetser’s and Apple Barrel & Orchards still remains as an important part of the community and is among the original agricultural operations in town.

Things to Do in Cumberland

Cumberland is a town that is proud of being very community-oriented. There are tons of different events, town-hosted activities, programs, community services, and volunteer opportunities for new residents and visitors to become involved with. 

When in the area, you can have the opportunity to:

  • Visit the Broad Cove Reserve – This is a 22-acre property that is tucked away just off of Route 88 with almost 11 acres running along the shoreline. This is the perfect place to have a peaceful walk along the coastline, hike and observe nature, swim, kayak, paddle boat, fish, picnic, bike along the trail, cross-country ski or participate in educational activities that are sometimes organized by the town. 
  • Have A Fun Day at Twin Brook Recreation Facility – this four season park has totally grown in facilities and various amenities over the years. This now covers more than 250 acres with over 22-acres of mixed athletic fields, baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, disc and golf course among others.
  • Play Golf at Val Halla – this municipal facility is owned and operated by the Town of Cumberland. It offers an 18-hole golf with outdoor and indoor driving range and two putting greens. Val Halla also has four asphalt lighted tennis courts.
