Ahhhhh. Summer-time in Maine. As Mainer’s this is what we look forward to all year. We put up with a lot during our cold Maine winters, so it’s no doubt we like to treat ourselves when the weather warms up. All of that biking, hiking, boating and beaching all day really can work up an appetite. This month our Business Spotlight is Ken’s Place. A local seafood restaurant located on Pine Point Road in Scarborough.
Since 1927 Ken’s Place in Scarborough has been feeding locals like us and visitors from every corner of the world with fresh Maine seafood. A tourist dining destination for sure, but the local’s keep this business going year after year. One of the reasons this establishment has been around so long is because Ken’s Place supports so many other local businesses starting with our local clammers, lobstermen and fishermen. They employ our high school and college students each summer, year after year. You know this is a good business and run well when workers return to the same job season after season. In return, the locals support Ken’s Place.
Ken’s opens each year like clockwork the third week in March with locals flocking to get their first taste of Ken’s fried clams and lobster rolls. Ken’s offers an inside dining room as well as dining outside at the picnic tables. Many people come prepared and bring pop up chairs to dine on the lawn as they know Ken’s is packed all day, every day in the summer months and it can be hard to get a table. This restaurant is so unassuming and down to earth just the way we like it.
Whether you like your clams in batter or crumbs, whole belly or strips or even cakes, if you are a clam lover, you’ll love Ken’s Place. They serve so much more than clams though. You’ll find fresh haddock, shrimp, scallops, raw oysters, lobster and lobster rolls on the menu. If seafood isn’t your thing, they serve burgers, hotdogs, chicken sandwiches and salads. Let’s not forget the locally made ice cream!
